The Sawan and Bhadon Pavilions, named after the Hindu rainy months, were constructed within an immense fortress to serve as an earthly imitation of paradise. The given painting by Ghulam Ali Khan depicts the Sawan Pavillion also known as the Summer House. Positioned at the end of a large ornamental water channel, it formed a central highlight of the Hayat-Baksh bagh, a magnificent "life-bestowing garden" designed according to the traditional Mughal charbagh layout. A serene water stream known as the Nahr-i-Bisht, or "Stream of Paradise," flowed seamlessly through these royal quarters and gardens, adding a sophisticated charm to the complex. These brilliant structures were specifically conceived to create a beautiful illusion of perennial waterfalls for the entertainment of the royalty. Over time, the vibrant red sandstone has begun to fade, and the once-milky marble has aged. The legendary singers, vivid golden decorations, and fragrant flower beds that once animated this space have long disappeared, leaving the complex parched but historically rich.
One of the functions of the Summer House was to provide a cool place for resting from Delhi's unbearable hot summer. So the pavilion has a lot of open spaces for ensuring natural ventilation of air thus cooling the place naturally.The choice of marble as a building material added both aesthetic beauty and provided natural cooling. Architecturally, the identical white marble pavilions sit symmetrically on high plinths, which were originally accessed by staircases that no longer exist. Although their lavish ornamentation has been obliterated, the structures still retain their unblemished pearly facades and three engrailed arches on three sides, underlining an ethereal symmetry. The use of lotus shaped domes and intensive floral shaped marble work on the pillars provided an overall touch of royalty to the resting place. Also, beautiful Parchinkari (marble inlay works) can be observed on the walls of the Pavillion. The complex utilized a highly functional water system where a stream ran from the back wall to cascade down the front plinth niches. Historically, these niches held gold and silver vases with golden flowers by day and glowing candles by night, creating a twinkling effect behind the waterfall that completed this architectural marvel.When air moved from the waterfall into the resting place, the water cooled the air thus it functioned like air conditioner. Therefore the painting by Ghulam Ali khan depicts the Summer House to its utmost details, which is both an engineering and architectural marvel that proves the height of Mughal craftsmanship.
