The painting "San Carlos Borromeo repartiendo limosnas al pueblo" (Saint Charles Borromeo Handing out Alms to the People) by artist José Salomé Pina, one of the most important Mexican artists from the 19th-century, recognized by his portraits and his legacy of paintings with biblical themes.
During his time as a student in the 'Academia de San Carlos' in Mexico City, around mid-19th century, students and professors were influenced by the reorganization of the Academy to incorporate important figures related to the institute in their works, one of them being Salomé Pina, who created the following painting for the Academy's meeting room.
Located in the center of the painting, Archbishop Saint Charles Borromeo of Milan can be found wearing red cardinal robes and gifting pieces of cloth to the poor next to him. On the right side, three priests can be seen holding his crosier along with a basket of bread, prepared with the purpose of handing the bread out to the crowd.
Following the Christian tradition, the Archbishop renounced to his riches and began living his life close to the poor and giving protection to the most unfortunate. His relationship with the Academy started after being set up as a patron by King Charles III in 1783.
In the background, a gothic style can be recognized, along with the Duomo of Milano on the left-side of the painting, presenting a warming scene where his kindness can be seen. This painting can be interpreted as the Archbishop being portrayed as the symbol for the institution which carries his name, providing protection and support to students and teachers, and sharing his principles through them to continue the message.
