Sa'di in the Rose Garden

Artist:Govardhan
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution\'s National Museum of Asian Art in Washington, D.C., USA.
Location History:The folio was initially painted under the patronage of the Mughal court of Emperor Shah Jahan. It has been in the possession of his descendants for several centuries and then appeared on the private market in the last decades of the 19th and the first decades of the 20th centuries. It was bought by the famous French jeweler and collector of Islamic and Indian arts, Henri Vever (1854-1942). Vever was a connoisseur who assembled a spectacular collection of Persian and Mughal manuscripts. After his death, part of the collection was bought by the Smithsonian Institution in 1986, and the folio was incorporated into the collections of the museum, being assigned the number F1998.5.6.

The painting is a beautiful illustration of Persian poetry with its bright colours, naturalistic themes and beautiful composition. The Timurid history adds to the varied influence of the Mughal style of painting.
