Aleksandr Morozov’s Rest at Haymaking is a quiet scene from rural Russian life, showing peasants taking a short break during the demanding work of the hay harvest. Painted in 1861, the work belongs to the growing tradition of Russian genre painting, where ordinary people and everyday labour were becoming worthy subjects of serious art. Morozov based the painting on his observations of rural life in the Pskov region. What makes the painting interesting is that there is no dramatic event taking place. The figures are simply resting, surrounded by the open landscape, grass and hay. Yet this simplicity gives the scene a sense of dignity. The workers are not presented only through their labour; for a moment, they are allowed to pause and exist within the landscape. The calm atmosphere also creates a strong connection between people and nature.
The painting reflects a changing interest in Russian art during the 1860s, when everyday rural life and the experiences of ordinary people were receiving greater attention. Morozov was awarded a gold medal by the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1861 for the work. Rather than romanticising rural life completely, the painting captures a small, peaceful moment within a life shaped by physical work.
