Attributed to Laharu of Chamba, the miniature painting, The Birth of Rama and His Three Brothers was created in the period of 1750 to 1775. This painting shows the birth of the four princes of Ayodhya (Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna) which is very significant to the epic story of the Ramayana. In his painting, Laharu shows many different scenes with King Dasaratha, queens; attendants; and musicians enjoying the royal celebrations. The colours used show how festive this occasion was, and the artist created a sense of grandiosity through his use of constructional detail and intricacy of costuming. Key attributes found in the Chamba style of Pahari art are seen here: excellent linework, balanced composition, and a narrative storytelling approach. This painting also supports the idea that the birth of these princes is not only a royal event, but also a very spiritual one, especially the birth of Rama who is considered one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Overall, this artwork combines spirituality, courtliness, and artistry to create a beautiful visual narrative of an epic event and to represent the type of miniature paintings found in eighteenth century India.
