Raja Balwant Singh [watching a dancer]

Artist:Nainsukh
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: Victoria and Albert Museum, London
Location History:Formerly in the collection of Major General G. McAndrew, Superintendent of Chamba, 1872-1874.

A presentation of leisure, artform and courtly life, this painting showcases ruler, Raja Balwant Singh viewing a dance performace accompanied by his 'huqqa' (smoking pot). The ruler is seated on a low, raised wooden takht and resting against a cushion beneath a pavilion structure. Possibly, a male dancer is shown imitating soft, graceful movements on the rhythms of the musicians right behind him. This painting depicts a very common practice of rulers enjoying their position and wealth through patronising art.
