| Location History: | The painting was originally commissioned by the Rajput rulers of the Mewar Kingdom. For generations, this painting—along with the rest of the Ragamala set—was preserved inside the private royal repository, palace libraries, or treasury of the Maharanas of Mewar. The painting officially changed hands from a private domain to public custody in the mid-20th century. The National Museum acquired the piece through the Art Purchase Committee, set up by the Indian Government. |
Sahibdin’s Ragini Maru of Sri Raga demonstrates the distinctive vitality of early Mewar miniature painting, where narrative clarity and bold colour take precedence over the ethereal delicacy seen in later Rajput masterpieces. Unlike the celebrated lyrical refinement of Nihal Chand’s Bani Thani or the soft romanticism of Kangra painting, Sahibdin constructs his scene through firm contours, saturated earthy colours and a carefully articulated landscape. The procession of Maru, accompanied by her royal companion, attendants and dogs, moves through an expansive Rajasthani setting. The relatively small figures against the broad landscape create a sense of journey and emotional distance, while the sparse vegetation and muted ground reinforce the austere character of the desert. Yet the composition remains animated through costume, gesture and the rhythmic movement of the animals. Like other celebrated Ragamala paintings, the work transforms music into visual atmosphere. However, its strength lies less in romantic intimacy than in its combination of poetic narrative, landscape and symbolic mood. The painting thus occupies an important position within the evolution of Indian miniature art, linking the directness of early Mewar painting with the increasingly sophisticated emotionalism of later Rajput schools.
