Radha, the Beloved of Krishna by Nihal Chand is a celebrated miniature painting from the Kishangarh school of Rajasthani painting. Nihal Chand was an esteemed member of the royal atelier of Kishangarh in the 18th century, under the employ of Crown Prince Sawant Singh. While many royal courts from the princely states of Northwestern India were important artistic centres, the Kishangarh school, and specifically the works of Nihal Chand, became the most well-known and recognisable artworks of Rajputana. This painting is among the most iconic images of Indian miniature painting and an archetype of the Kishangarh visual idiom.
The painting presents Radha in an idealised left profile, her head covered with a translucent veil that simultaneously conceals and highlights her ethereal beauty. Her features embody the metaphors of beauty described in Sanskrit literary tradition: eyes like a lotus flower, eyebrows arched like the bow of Kamadeva (the god of love), a sharp nose, and a pronounced pointed chin below thin, inward-curving red lips. She has heavy-lidded, half-closed, lotus-shaped eyes that convey amorous yearning and spiritual ecstasy. Strands of serpentine hair frame her moon-like face. The high, slightly receding forehead, the elongated facial structure, and the exaggerated curve where the brow meets the eye are hallmark elements of the Kishangarh School facial type created by Nihal Chand. Radha is adorned with queenly pearl ornaments and gold jewellery. Her hands display intricate henna designs and painted fingernails, details that signal her state as the heroine who has dressed and adorned herself in anticipation of union with her beloved. The diaphanous veil drapes elegantly over her head and shoulders, its sheer quality rendered with remarkable delicacy. Her posture is proud yet graceful, the superior emblem of the shringara rasa (the aesthetic sentiment of romantic love).
The painting exemplifies the Kishangarh school's unique style, characterised by sharp, elongated facial features, pointed chins, receding foreheads, lotus-shaped eyes, and serpentine hair. Nihal Chand developed this distinctive facial type under Raja Sawant Singh (r. 1748–57), using it primarily for depicting Radha, Krishna, and a few gopis, emphasising an idealised rather than naturalistic representation.
When I look at Nihal Chand’s Radha, the Beloved of Krishna (popularly known as Bani Thani), I am instantly struck by how masterfully it translates Sanskrit poetic metaphors into a breathtaking visual reality. Standing as the ultimate archetype of the 18th-century Kishangarh school, the painting draws my gaze to Radha’s striking left profile. I find her heavy-lidded, lotus-shaped eyes, arched brows, and serpentine tresses particularly mesmerizing, capturing a delicate balance between amorous yearning and spiritual ecstasy.
