“Prince Khurram Attacking a Lion” is a Mughal miniature painting by Balchand, created around 1640–1650 as part of the Padshahnama, or “Book of Emperors,” commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan. The painting depicts an event that took place in 1610, when Prince Khurram, the future Emperor Shah Jahan, was eighteen years old. During a royal hunt, a lion attacked Anup Rai, one of Jahangir’s attendants. Prince Khurram intervened and struck the lion with his sword, helping to rescue the injured man.
