“Prayers and Recitations at the Muharram Festival” is a work by the esteemed Company era painter, Sewak Ram, one of the most prominent and influential painters of the Patna school of painting. In this work, we see the depiction of the Mourning of Muharram, a solemn period in the first month of the Islamic Lunar Calendar, taken for commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein. Sewak Ram was known for his depictions of religious festivals and processions, and this painting follows in this line. The scene is set in an Imambara, the traditional Shi’a congregation hall. The lighting and use of sombre colours in the hall reflects the sombre and serious nature of this gathering. The central focus of the work is the Tazia or the symbolic replica of Hussein’s tomb. Sewak Ram is able to make a highly detailed depiction of the intricately made Tazia, set in black. The hall is populated by the attendees, most dressed in white, with the ones dressed in black and green signifying reverence. The fine linework and brushstrokes of Sewak Ram makes sure the face of every figure is clear to the observer, ensuring the observer can see the deep mourning and contemplative sadness present on the countenance of every attendee. The composition is also incredibly well done, with the use of space ensuring that the observer’s eyes are led straight to the Tazia, before taking time to observe the attendees and be immersed in the mourning themselves.
