Portrait of Murad Bakhsh (1624–61)

Artist:Balchand
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Tempera
Current Location: Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio, USA
Location History:Originally a portrait jewel, the painting later became part of an album page. It passed through several private collections before being gifted to the Cleveland Museum of Art in 2013.

The portrait presents Murad Bakhsh as a figure of controlled elegance and quiet authority. His composed profile, richly patterned clothing, elaborate turban, and delicate flower suggest both princely refinement and the carefully constructed image of Mughal royalty. The contrast between the soft green background and vibrant orange, white, and gold details draws attention to his presence while maintaining a sense of balance. The intricate floral borders further frame him within a world of luxury and courtly sophistication. Yet, the small flower held gently in his hand introduces a softer, almost intimate quality, suggesting that beneath the formal representation of power lies a carefully cultivated sense of individuality and grace.
