Portrait of Mirza Fath-ul-Mulk Bahadur

This artwork was made by Ghulam Ali Khan in the year 1852. It depicts Mirza Fath-ul-Mulk Bahadur often known as Mirza Fakhru. He was the last crown prince of the Mughal empire and also happened to be the son of the final Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar. There are borders along the sides. This image is among several that depict the family and ancient structures in and near Delhi. The image contains both English and Persian texts and showcases his prowess at using watercolour in combination with gold pigments. The text states that the date is November 1852. All these images were stored in a green box with gold lettering stating "DELHEE 1854." This image of Mirza Fath-ul-Mulk Bahadur is significant as it depicts his appearance a few years prior to his death in 1856. This occurred prior to the major revolt in 1857 that altered everything. Ghulam Ali Khan was a versatile Indian painter of the 19th century. He was active from 1817 to 1855, thus had a four decade long career. Ghulam Ali Khan served as the artist for the Mughal royal family. He was able to paint in various styles. He created artwork for the family as well as for the British patrons. His artworks hold great significance as they depict India during a time of transformation. Ghulam Ali Khan created portraits of Emperor Bahadur Shah II and his children. He additionally created artworks depicting structures in the capital city. These artworks assist us in recalling what the Mughal dynasty was like.
