This famous painting was created by Chae Yong-sin (1850–1941), a former military official who retired to become one of the most important Korean portrait painters of his time. He was highly respected for painting realistic portraits of King Gojong, royal family members, and government officials. However, paintings of women were very rare during this era, which makes this specific portrait incredibly special. The artwork shows Lady Un standing straight and tall while gently holding a smiling baby boy. She is wearing a simple hanbok, consisting of a light-colored jeogori (jacket) and a long, blue-green chima (skirt). Even though Lady Un was a real person, this is actually an imaginary portrait because she lived long before the artist was born. History tells us that she was originally a gisaeng (a traditional female entertainer) belonging to the local government in Gasan, Pyeongan Province. She became a hero during the Hong Gyeong-rae Rebellion in 1811 when she bravely saved the life of a local official. To thank her for her incredible courage, the government freed her from her low, near-slave social status and rewarded her with land.
