The emergence of humanism during the renaissance led to an ideological shift in Europe that gradually seeped into all other domains, likewise, the fine arts or visual arts were no exception, the painters, sculptors and other practitioners attained cognisance about their practice being a formal discipline and not just mere craft, subsequently they strived to establish professional education centres around Europe in order to systematically study the core fundamental principles of visual arts and codify the subfields within the discipline. Their efforts paid off as several formal academies were inaugurated across Italy and France in the 1600's and 1700's, such as the Academy of Art in Florence, 1563 CE (the first true art academy), Accademia di San Luca in Rome, 1593 CE and the French Royal Academy of Art in Paris, 1648 CE. The aftermath of this development was yet to be seen in other European nations as well as in the colonies of European imperial states around the globe, and it would take a few more centuries for the practitioners residing in these regions to catch up. In Mexico, the first fine arts academy; the Academy of San Carlos was founded in 1783 CE. The painter Miguel Rudecindo Contreras played a major role in the establishment of the San Carlos academy alongside Jose de Ibarra; another contemporary artist. Sources suggest that Ibarra was to serve as the director of the institution they established while Contreras would become part of a group of practitioners promoting the initiative, their efforts bore fruit in the form of the San Carlos Academy in 1783 CE. The portrait above was first considered to be a self-portrait of the master painter Miguel Cabrera and then of Jose de Ibarra, until recently, a document among the files of the old San Carlos Academy clarified its authorship and the work was attributed to Miguel Rudecindo Contreras. Contreras is the lesser known painter among his contemporaries and only a handful of his works survive today, making him a fiercely sought after artist of the 18th century Mexico. Contreras primarily worked as a portraitist, his work is grounded in empiricism and his style features the balanced neoclassical aesthetics that gained popularity in the late 18th century as artists began to move away from the dramatic baroque visual language. The artwork "The Portrait of Jose de Ibarra" is a piece dedicated to his friend and acquaintance, the contemporary painter, Jose de Ibarra, and is a bust-length composition against a dark, neutral background. Contreras demonstrates masterful attention to detail as he renders the physiognomy in a soft and delicate manner. The artwork can be utilised as an example while interpreting the illusionistic quality of oil painting as discussed by John Berger in his book; "Ways of Seeing". In a broader sense, the painting reflects the evolving approach of the 18th century Mexican painters as they began to emphasize on realism, observation and classical restraint instead of the theatricality seen in the Baroque phase. The authorship dispute surrounding the work also highlights how documentation and archival plays an invaluable role in the art world.

Miguel Rudecindo Contreras employs restrained Neoclassical aesthetics, subtle chiaroscuro, and delicate tonal modelling to capture not merely Ibarra's likeness but his artistic identity and quiet dignity.
