“Portrait of a Young Indian Scholar” is a work by Mir Sayyid Ali, the esteemed Mughal artist who once served under the Persian Shah Tahmasp I, before coming under the patronage of the Mughal Emperor Humayun . The work was done in 1555 in Lahore, a city that served as a major center of power of the Mughal Empire, especially under Humayun’s reign when much of the Northern Indian region of the empire had come under the reign of the Afghans. The work depicts a young, clean shaven scholar, dressed in a south asian garb, green with floral patterns, with a sheer shawl tied across his chest and a red band around his waist, with a knife tucked in. He has draped on his head, a white deccani turban, with a decorative band around it, and a floral ornament on the top. The scholar is seated on a gorgeous carpet, and is reading a book that is placed on an intricate bookstand. We can see beside him an inkwell, a pen case, an unfurled scroll, and a piece of paper, upon which there is written a poem towards the top, and the signature of Mir Sayyid Ali on the bottom. Some theorise that the work is in fact a sort of self-portrait of Mir Sayyid Ali. The background is also equally gorgeous, with lush green grass and flowers along the ground. The work is an impressive display of the skillful master that had now become a member of the Mughal court.
