The painting has a dream-like quality to it, devoting a softness to the light and colours that renders the woman as though a figment of the imagination, or a fantasy. The mask is the main point of contrast within this image, its darker colour reducing its haziness even under the reflective light and yet matching perfectly with the necklace the woman wears, perhaps as a demonstration that while she may be allowed to take off expressions and masks, there is still something binding her to behave a certain way regardless.
