This oil painting on wood panel is one of the masterpieces painted by Antonello Da Messini, one of the pioneering artists of Early Renaissance in Europe. Born in southern Italy, in the city of Messina, his works were comparatively more popular across northern Italy. This was quite a remarkable feat to achieve. The artist is thought to have trained in Naples which had a strong influence of Netherlandish art and was also inspired by masters like Jan Van Eyck, Van Der Weyden, and Petrus Christus. Messini also practiced in Venice and his learnings are reflected in the pieces he made in his later career. This piece features a portrait of a man. Earlier it was thought be a self-portrait, however that conclusion is now considered erroneous. In the painting, we are presented with a bust-length depiction of a young man who directly gazes upon us. Usually the audience is seen to be examining a piece of art, however in this piece, it feels as if the painted subject is analyzing the audience as well. This highlights the psychological representation of this man, a skill of which Messini was a master of. The subject is sat against an almost black dark brown background. On the other hand, the bright and vibrant luminosity with which the portrait has been painted, brings the subject into our focus. This luminosity is a characteristic of Venetian school of art, wherein paint is layered in patches and fluid forms. The man wears a red cap - a characteristic of typical venetian patrician and brown leather robes. The positioning of the subject displays the Netherlandish influence - a three-quarter view. This painting has been painted with an immaculate attention to detail visible in the depiction of individual hair on the man's head, the folds of his inner garment, and the remarkable handling of paints in layering. Messini, in this painting has extraordinarily combined the psychological depth of the Italian renaissance and the compositional strategies of Netherlandish art.
The artist Antonello de Messina had learned a great deal from masters like Jan Van Eyck and Petrus Christus. His corpus of portrait paintings are notable among his body of work. On one hand we see a very realistically depicted anatomy and on the other there's always a psychological element in how he paints expressions and facial features in his portraits.
