This miniature painting showing the scene “Plato Charming the Wild Animals with Music” comes from the manuscript Khamsa of Nizami (1595–1596) commissioned by the Mughal emperor, Akbar. This work from the peak of the imperial Mughal workshop shows an interesting cultural synthesis. Although the story comes from Persian poetry about a Greek philosopher, the treatment is Mughal. It weaves in Persian elegance with a fresh interest in realism and naturalism.
The harmony of Islamic, Hindu and European elements of the painting speaks of the cosmopolitan court culture of Akbar’s age. Through the support of Akbar, artists in the Mughal Court began moving away from the styles of the Safavid Persians to an observation of the world and its physicality. This shift is reflected in the extremely detailed portrayal of the vast kingdom of animals. It includes the native animals of India and foreign creatures that all come together to peacefully surround the musical thinker.

Using a bright mineral color palette, detailing in the rocks, and a remarkable use of atmospheric perspective influenced by Europeans prints of Jesuit missionaries.
