Giovanna Garzoni (1600-70) was one of the very few female artists who excelled in the male-dominated field of Italian Baroque period. She was widely celebrated for her intricate, exquisiste still-life paintings alongside her portrait miniatures and botanical studies. She was born in Ascoli Piceno in an artisanal family, received her training under her uncle and later moved to Venice where she studied with Palma Giovane.
She challenged and opposed the traditional gender roles by independently travelling across France and Italy, while also working for some of the most influential patrons such as the Medici family, Cardinal Richelieu, the House of Savoy, and Louis XIII. Giovanna was renowned for her intricately detailed tempera and watercolour paintings on vellum, a beautiful combination her artistic excellence with scientific precision. She was an established botanical painter given her balanced compositions, exquisite brushwork, and natural and realistic observation of plants, fruits, vegetables, animals, and insects.
Giovanni Garzoni executed the painting “Plate of Figs” in the medium of bodycolour (tempera) on vellum, making it one of the finest still-life paintings. It is a part of her famed series known as the "Twenty Small Paintings on Vellum," in which every piece is dedicated to a single fruit or vegetable. The ripened purple figs are neatly arranged on a plain plate, with the rich skins, split flesh, and the remarkable colour variations and textures created with precision.
