Pheasants among Trees- Flowers of the Four Seasons by Kano-school painter Kano Shōei is a masterwork that depicts a pair pheasants among the bushes and all the four seasons on a single canvas. The spring blossoms with winter foliage suggests eternal renewal along with drying leaves to indicate autumn. The pheasants are symbols of imperial grace and celestial order in this landscape and the artwork conveys the aspiration for timeless prosperity, presenting an ordered and perfected universe where the chaotic progression of time is tamed and life flourishes perpetually.
