Part of the Ghats at Benares
Artist:Sita Ram
| Support Type: | Paper |
| Paint Type: | Watercolor |
| Current Location: | British Library Collection |
| Location History: | It was created around 1814–1815 as part of a larger illustrated travel series documenting North India. The work belongs to the ‘Views by Seeta Ram from Benares to Nazibghur, Vol. III’ folio, produced during the expedition of the Marquess of Hastings from Calcutta to Delhi. Today, the painting is housed in the British Library collection in London. |
Sita Ram's work is a consistent display of India's soft beauty, and the way architecture can harmonise with nature in such a light. Under the multi-layered skies that show sunlight, storm clouds and an easy emptiness all at once, the ghat remains steady as the people do, perhaps as a demonstration of what faith means to them.
