Masanobu’s print highlights how parody can challenge the authority of classical narratives by relocating them within the intimate, imperfect world of everyday relationships. The humour lies in the contrast between the original legend’s moral seriousness and the lover’s rather desperate attempt to conceal his infidelity. Yet the work also invites a broader reading: the man’s exaggerated gesture of washing his ears transforms an act of philosophical purity into an absurd performance of innocence. The cat holding the incriminating letter becomes a particularly effective device, exposing the limits of his deception. By blending literary allusion with domestic comedy, Masanobu makes classical knowledge accessible while gently mocking human hypocrisy and the gap between moral ideals and actual behaviour.
