The cranes have beautifully rendered, slender bodies and necks with soft feathers. What I find most fascinating about this painting is the calm and untroubled atmosphere depicted by the master. The absence of other elements in the grove, apart from the two cranes, makes the painting especially serene and pure. The white space around the cranes and the gentle strokes of ink create an ethereal aura of stillness and solitude. The painter managed to capture the calm and quiet of a bamboo grove with just a few strokes of the brush. The chosen medium also plays an essential role in the overall look and feel of this painting. Instead of using bright colors to depict the cranes and the bamboo grove, which would have given the painting a more festive and lively feeling, Chikuden used black ink and pale colors to render the scene in a more elegant manner. Additionally, this painting reminds the viewer of the symbolic meaning of cranes in Japanese and East Asian cultures in general. Overall, I find this painting to be exquisite in its simplicity and meaningful in its depiction of the tranquility of a bamboo grove with cranes.
