Sewak Ram was a renowned painter from Murshidabad who mainly mastered Company style paintings. He did his practice in Patna and specialized majorly on portrayal of indigenous festivals, processions and weddings. Sewak Ram gained reputation for his large scale depictions of both Hindu and Muslim festivals. Alongside those large depictions he also painted some simple scenarios using Company style. The above painting "Oxen drawing water" by Sewak Ram is one of his some exceptional works which portray some simple scenarios apart from festive gatherings. The structural arrangement of this painting relies on a deliberate division between dynamic physical activity and vast motionless space. The lower half of the paper hosts a focused horizontal strip of human and animal labor, ground by an angled dirt path. In contrast, the upper half of the composition is dominated by a sweeping, minimalistic sky. Within the action done he shows the traditional irrigation mechanism. On the right, a man rises a small whip to urge a pair of white oxen. A rope stretches from their harnesses over a substantial wooden pulley assembly built atop a well platform on the left. We see a distinctive sensibility of Patna school of painting. The muted earth-toned watercolours, usage of colours like sand brown, soft white and hazy desaturated green portrays the emotion and essence of rural terrain, its atmospheric depth and human connection to the land.
