Out Of The Stable

Artist:Ren Renfa
Support Type: Silk
Paint Type: Ink
Current Location: Palace Museum , Benjing

Upon looking at Ren Renfa’s Out of the Stable, what stands out first is the relationship between the horses and the people leading them. The horses are much larger and more visually powerful than the attendants, which makes them feel like the real focus of the painting. Even though they are being led out of the stable, they do not appear completely controlled. Their different postures and movements give each one a sense of individuality and energy. I also find the long handscroll format interesting because the scene seems to unfold gradually. Rather than presenting one dramatic moment, the painting makes us follow the horses as they move through the space. This gives the work a quiet sense of movement and makes it feel almost like a story. The painting is not simply about taking horses out of a stable. It seems to capture a moment between confinement and freedom. The horses are leaving a controlled space and entering the open world, which makes their movement feel meaningful. At the same time, the presence of the attendants reminds us that these powerful animals are still connected to human authority and the imperial world. I think this balance between freedom and control is what makes the painting particularly interesting.
