Yi Yun-yeong, also known by his pen name Danreung was a significant scholar-literati painter of the late Joseon period. He lived from 1714 to 1759. He was a member of the muninhwa literati painting community where calligraphy, poetry, philosophy, and the scholars character were all closely related to painting. Yi Yun-yeong used landscapes and natural subjects to convey his own ideas and feelings rather than painting merely for realistic representation. He belonged to the intellectual artistic circles of eighteenth century Joseon and was linked to other significant literati artists such as Yi In-sang.
The landscape of Danyang, where his father was a magistrate particularly captivated him. He spent several years living in the area after traveling there in 1751 and developing a strong bond with its mountains, rivers, cliffs, and well known scenic locations. In his writings he expresses a great deal of admiration for the scenery of Danyang even drawing comparisons between the landscape surrounding Gudambong and Oksunbong and the well known landscapes painted by Huang Gongwang during the Yuan dynasty in China. One of Yi Yun-yeong's surviving pieces is Old Pine Tree, a tiny, light colored painting on paper that is currently part of the collection of the Gansong Art Museum. In East Asian literati paintings, a mature, weathered pine tree is a significant subject because the pine has historically been associated with strength, endurance, longevity, and integrity. Therefore, in Yi Yun-yeong's hands, the pine can be interpreted not only as a botanical subject but also as a reflection of the ideal character of the scholar. The tree is a suitable subject for a literati artist who valued disengagement from the outside world and integrity because of its aged appearance, which suggests something that has endured time and challenging circumstances. His painting style is restrained rather than overly ornamental; the focus is on the expressiveness of the brush and ink, enabling the observer to understand the tree's personality thru comparatively straightforward shapes. Therefore Yi Yun-yeong's artistic significance is found not only in his paintings but also in the way he turned natural subjects into manifestations of introspection, scholarly identity, and inner character. The artwork of Yi Yun-yeong exemplifies the late Joseon muninhwa tradition, in which the scholar's thoughts were expressed thru nature. Because of his strong bond with Danyang the landscape served as more than just scenery for him it was a place of solace, introspection, camaraderie, and creative inspiration. This makes his work especially intriguing.
