Mostly in private collections only after the painting was done.
François Édouard Picot's Odalisque, completed in 1829 is a masterclass in intimate drama, completely converting the scenario on passive academic nudes. Historically, an "odalisque" was an Ottoman harem chambermaid. However, 19th-century French painters transformed the term into a massive trend called Orientalism, using exotic, imaginary Middle Eastern backdrops as an excuse to paint highly sensual, socially acceptable female nudes for European audiences.Stylistically, this tiny 24 x 32 cm oil painting sits right at the crossroads of precise Neoclassicism and emotional Romanticism. Instead of a static model, Picot paints a woman flush and fired by passion, making it feel like her lover just left the frame and it is full of vibrancy and movement. She is stretched out across luxury gold and black blankets next to an overturned wine goblet on a tripod table which is a classic artistic symbol for total sensory indulgence. Picot uses high-contrast lighting to make her porcelain skin absolutely dominate against the room's deep shadows.Art insiders love this piece because Picot recycled her exact pose later that year for his myth piece, Leda and the Swan. Since it is locked away in a private collection, it is a rare gem for viewers that they won't see it on everyday museum walls, hence it is a rare piece of work.
The artist Picot is a student of Vincent and of David. His works are usually centered around historical and mythological subjects.
This artwork titled Odalisque is a 24 x 32 cm masterpiece. Here, Odalisque is considered to be distraught after being separated from her lover. She is laid on a bed with a yellow hued covering, perhaps drunk, reflected by the empty goblet lying on the bedside. The background suggests that daybreak has just begun.
