Nine Peaks after Snow is a famous hanging scroll ink painting completed in 1349 by Huang Gongwang, the revered leader of the Four Masters. In his eighties, the master painter created this work of art, capturing his impressions of a winter landscape covered with heavy snowfall. The artwork contains high peaks, making up the dominant upper part of the painting, and a few houses, winding tracks, bare trees, and rocky streams in the lower ground parts. To create the illusion of coldness and purity of the exhibited scene, Huang implemented a special technique of using light ink washes to depict the sky and water, leaving the white paper untouched to represent the snow-laden peaks and the ground. The master also utilized the long dry brushstrokes (pima cun) to define the forms of the rocks, giving the painting a sequence of furrows and creating spaces of white ink. Overall, Nine Peaks after Snow is a perfect example of a literati painting; its artistic qualities and simplicity of means reflect the Daoist religious practice and self-disciplinary way of life of the master. The painting’s simplicity and contrast between the pale peaks and the dark ink suggest how the artist probably overcame the harsh times of the war and secured his retirement in the mountains. In particular, the motif of the snow-laden peaks in the distant hills dominates the image, symbolizing isolation and tranquility required by the Daoist philosophy. Additionally, the dark ink layers of the sky and the water below are intertwined, presenting the view of alternating yin and yang or yi yang lai fu, a Daoist saying implying alternation of the opposite natural forces.
Nine Peaks After Snow is a beautiful depiction of an impressive and tranquil mountainous landscape of high peaks, valleys, trees, and a river running through the whole landscape. The landscape is dominated by the peaks that add to the sense of vastness and height of the landscape. I think that the most interesting thing about the landscape is its layers because the peaks get lighter from top to bottom making the painting deep. The brownish and earthy colors make the painting look quiet and mysterious making the scene look ancient. There are also small human figures depicted in the painting making the peaks look even more विशाल. In my opinion, this piece of art is the embodiment of the harmony of the human being and the nature. The human figures look insignificant among all the nature around emphasizing their insignificance in the big picture. The realistic depiction of the trees, rocks, water, and peaks also emphasizes the observation of the artist.
