Nawab Muzaffar ‘Ali Khan on Horseback, attributed to Rai Kalyan Das (Chitarman II), is a Mughal miniature dating to around 1730. The work is executed in ink, opaque watercolour and gold on paper and depicts Muzaffar ‘Ali Khan, the governor of Ajmer under Emperor Muhammad Shah, mounted on a richly decorated horse. The composition follows the Mughal tradition of the equestrian portrait, presenting the nobleman in a dignified, commanding posture. The horse is shown in profile, while the carefully rendered costume, jewellery, weapons and elaborate harness emphasise the sitter’s aristocratic status. The fine linear detailing and controlled application of colour demonstrate the precision characteristic of late Mughal miniature painting. Gold accents add richness and visual emphasis to the figure and accessories.
