“Nattu Charaya Kada(The Arrack Shop)”, also known as “A Woman Selling Local Liquor (Arrack)” is a beautiful work done by the accomplished painter C. Raja Raja Verma. The painter was the brother of the famous Indian artist Raja Ravi Verma, and worked as his agent and manager. However, he was an impressive artist in his own right, known especially for his plein-air works. This work captures a woman managing a small liquor shop, a scene common in the towns of southern India where the esteemed artist was born and raised. She sits brazenly, a hand on her hips, staring off into the open road, perhaps for any possible customers. She is minimally dressed, with a pair of earrings, bangles, and a necklace. Her white, unstitched garment makes her stand in the scene filled with earthly colours, making the observer’s eyes drawn to her. Behind her, we see some glass bottles and other paraphernalia inside the shop. C. Raja Raja Verma is able to transport the observer into the scene. The shading is exquisitely done, reminding one of the harsh summer afternoons of the south. The shop is also shown in a rather dilapidated state, with peeling off paint, and a small roof above with numerous holes.
Nattu Charaya Kada (The Arrack Shop) by C. Raja Raja Varma is a fine example of genre painting that captures the everyday social life of rural Kerala.
