The above is a famous painting of Qajar ruler Nāser al Din Shah attributed to Ismail Jalayr, a court artist and renowned painter from the Qajar era.Through much of the information about his earlier life are uncertain, Ismail was the son Haji Mohammad Khan Jalayr Kalati who came from an old and renouned family of Khorasan (eastern Iran). Jalayr was a student of Dār al Funon, an art academy set up by Nāser Al Din Shah Qajar. It was at Dār al Funon that earned his skills and acquired knowledge over the art of painting from Monsieur Constant and Mirzā Ali Akbar Khan Kāšāni, two renowned masters that age while the institution was under the long directorship of Aliqoli Mirzā E'teżàd al Salțana. Jalayr completed his education from the academy as one its best students and later became a master in the same institution. During his early career days, his works attracted the attention of the Shah (king) and some of his high ranking nobles like Ali Asgar Khan and Dust Mohammad Khan. Very soon, he was placed in the royal atelier while continuing his work from the academy. Jalayr was master of several drawing and painting techniques and had a love for witty anecdotes and repartees. He was the master of two contemporary yet contrasting techniques of the Qajar art- the Irāni Sāzi, which focused on authentic styles and elements of Iranian art in aspects such as facial features, make-over, dresses, costumes and other areas untouched by European influence as well as tabiyat sāzi, which borrowed European realism in depiction of flora and fauna. This made his artworks unique which is reflected in the painting above which gives an natural, almost surreal depiction of the Shah on horseback in a natural landscape setting marked by greenery.
“Nasir Al-Din Shah Qajar on horseback” is a beautiful work of modern Irani painting by the royal artist Ismail Jalayr. The work is exquisitely made, realistic yet also dream-like and serene. The Shah Nasir Al-Din is portrayed with this ethereal mist that underscores the entire painting, giving it a mystical element that feels like a scene someone would see out of a trance, and giving the royal subject an air of mysticism, as though witnessing the shah itself is a magical experience for the observer. The faded tones of brown and green that dominate the work are broken by the Shah and his refined clothing befitting his status, making the observer have to reckon with the Shah in every part of the painting.
