Narcissus

Artist:Caravaggio
Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Galleria Nazionale di Arte Antica, Palazzo Barberini, Rome
Location History:c. 1597–1599 — Painted in Rome; likely acquired by Cardinal Francesco Maria del Monte. 1645 — An export license from Rome records a Narcissus "by Caravaggio" being sent to Savona; sender identified only as "Jo. Bap." Identification with the present painting is not certain. 1645–1913 — Ownership undocumented; no intermediate owners or locations recorded. 1913 — Seen by Roberto Longhi in the private collection of Paolo D'Ancona, Milan. 1916 — Attributed to Caravaggio by Longhi; purchased by Vasilij Khwoschinski, who donated it to the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Antica. 1936–present — Housed at Palazzo Barberini, Rome.

The picture is arresting due to the use of light and darkness in the painting and the coinage of the term ‘narcissistic’ from the name Narcissus makes one actually see for oneself what this self-love will look like.
