The above painting presents one of the most resplendent portraits of the famous French emperor turned military corporal, Nepolean Bonaparte, painted by one of the finest Italian artists of the period, Andrea Appiani. The painting presents a undeterred, magnificent, calm portrait of Napolean exuding a quiet authority. The shading and flowing brushstrokes render an almost live recapturing of Nepoleon, or rather how Nepoleon would have liked himself to be seen. The intricate detailing of the decorations, the fine, smooth colouring of his royal, military attire, his cape and the beautiful crown jewels, create an iconic image which attracts the eye if the viewer, standing I contrast to the dark, fading background which centres the focus on the subject.
