Mrs Mounter at the Breakfast Table

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Tate Britain, London, United Kingdom.
Location History:The painting was first exhibited at the Mansard Gallery in London in 1917. It was later purchased by the Tate Gallery in 1942 using funds from the Knapping Fund (Accession Number: N05317).

To me, the painting represents the dignity and importance of ordinary everyday life. Gilman takes a simple domestic moment—a woman sitting at her breakfast table—and gives it unusual visual intensity through strong colours, expressive brushwork and a direct composition. Mrs Mounter's quiet, serious expression contrasts with the vivid surroundings, making the scene feel both personal and emotionally powerful. Rather than presenting an idealised or glamorous subject, Gilman focuses on an ordinary person and environment. I interpret this as an example of how modern British artists could find artistic and emotional significance in everyday experiences and working-class domestic life.
