Mount Fuji and the Miho Pine Forest

Soga Shōhaku painted this dramatic scene using black ink on two large paper folding screens. The artwork features a giant dragon rising next to Mount Fuji and a peaceful countryside. This piece is very rare. It is the oldest and largest known painting to combine Mount Fuji and a dragon in one connected scene. This pairing also carries a special message. In Japanese, saying "Fuji" and "dragon" sounds exactly like the words for "removing all sadness." The artwork beautifully captures all four seasons at once, showing spring cherry blossoms alongside cold winter snow. Shōhaku used a clever trick to paint the mountain itself. He left the paper completely blank to form the bright snow on top, using dark ink washes around it to outline the peak. The visual story flows naturally from right to left across the screens. It begins with a calm ocean bay and smooth hills. As your eyes move left, a wild dragon bursts out from the clouds. The creature whips up heavy wind, rain, and waves, filling the sky with a massive storm. The man behind this masterpiece, Soga Shōhaku, was a fiercely independent Japanese artist. He refused to join any official art schools. He also had no interest in following the standard rules of his time. People knew him for his masterful ink brushwork and his rebellious attitude.
