Ramkinkar Baij (1906-1980) is considered by many as the father's figure in modern Indian art and he is known mostly as a sculptor. His innovative approach to art has changed the face of Indian art forever. Baij was born in a simple family in Bankura district of West Bengal and his early exposure to rural life and local idol-making shaped his vision as an artist. Baij's talent was honed in Kala Bhavana, Santiniketan under the eminent artist Nandalal Bose. Baij became famous for his large sculptures, such as Santhal Family and Yaksha-Yakshi statues in front of the Reserve Bank of India in New Delhi, but his work includes many paintings, watercolors, and drawings. His art combines the elements of folk tradition with Western modernism while always reflecting the rhythms of everyday life.
The creation titled Mother & Child, which was developed as watercolor painted on a sheet of paper of an area of 7 x 11 inches, reveals the artist’s ability to work with fluid materials. Instead of employing the stiff academic styles dominating the artists’ environment at that time, Baij worked with watercolors spontaneously. The watercolor medium rendered it possible for him to capture an instantaneous gesture where pigments blend with water appropriately on the surface used. In the studied piece, the economy of using simple lines and the fluidity of washes are more important than meticulous details. Instead of using hard contours of the figures, Baij resorts to swift brushwork and tonal graduations to deliver the idea of the form. The theme of the image is expressed through simple semi-abstract figures that allow for deeper emotional resonance. The play of light and shadow makes this painting even deeper and more atmospheric.
The image of mother and child symbolizes a timeless archetype but it becomes more elaborate and attuned to the socio-cultural experience of rural India in Baij’s work. Baij has spent a significant part of his life working and living among the native Santhal community of Santiniketan who served as an inspiration for Baij as a representative of rural communities and their struggles, social behavior, and perseverance.
The subject of Mother & Child is no longer limited to mere sentimental domesticity; it reflects the theme of core resilience, feeling of care, and primary strength of rural communities that the mother represents and embodies. In this connection, mother reflects earthy nobility from Baij’s perspective which becomes apparent in his works, showing that she is not affected by urban glitz and is firmly connected with nature and mere survival.
This painting of a mother and child reflects the strength, love, and resilience that is the hallmark of the rural Indian community. Contrary to a domestic setting, the image displays an earthen nobility and a mother's devotion to her child, free from the trappings of urban living.
