Moonlit Landscape

Yun Yong (1708–1740, pen name Cheonggo) was an extremely talented Korean literati painter, calligrapher, poet, and scholar of the late Joseon dynasty. He was born into the aristocratic Haenam Yun clan, grandson of the famous realist painter Yun Du-seo and the son of painter and calligrapher Yun Deok-hui, and so inherited one of Korea’s most distinguished artistic traditions. And yet he died at only thirty-three, Yun Yong’s work was very sophisticated, showing a high level of technical skill and scholarly sensibility. His subjects included landscapes, flower-and-bird subjects, genre scenes, and studies of plants and insects; his works are noted for delicate brushwork, balanced compositions, and close observation of nature. His paintings adhere to the ideals of Joseon literati art, which emphasised the harmonious relationship between artistic expression, intellectual cultivation, and nature. Yun Yong is now regarded as an important figure in Korean painting of the eighteenth century, and the works that survive offer valuable insight into the development of literati painting in the late Joseon period. The Moonlit Landscape is one part of Yun Yongs collection of paintings that still exists. It shows the style of Joseon literati art. The painting is done with ink on paper. It shows a landscape lit up by the moon. There are mountains, trees, water and buildings in the painting. They are all arranged in a way. Yun Yong does not try to make the painting dramatic.
