Monochromatic Kohbar (The Sacrificial Marriage Mandala)

Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Natural Dye
Current Location: Madhubani District, Mithila Region, Bihar, India.
Location History:While a Kohbar is historically drafted as a temporary wall mural inside the Kohbar Ghar (the nuptial chamber of a bride's home), modern configurations like the one shown are painted on portable substrates. This allows the deeply symbolic, localized folk customs of rural Bihar to be preserved and displayed in contemporary art galleries and international exhibitions globally.

Monochromatic Kohbar (The Sacrifical Marriage Mandala)" serves as a visually hypnotic tapestry that structurally and symbolically celebrates matrimonial blessing. At its literal and symbolic heart lies the Kamaldah—a massive, stylized lotus ring pierced vertically by a bamboo stalk—which serves as a potent metaphor for the harmonious convergence of feminine and masculine cosmic forces. Radiating outward from this focal mandala, the composition utilizes dense, saturated Kachni (line-work) in deep crimson to intentionally eliminate negative space, embodying the classic horror vacui characteristic of traditional Mithila art. Within its tightly bound, cross-hatched geometric partitions, the painting houses a vast pantheon of sacred motifs and ritual elements: the far left captures the divine guardians Shiva and Parvati overseeing the union with marital stability, while the surrounding canvas is filled with native wildlife like birds and fish to signify life's abundance alongside ceremonial palanquins. Together, these elements transform a complex layout of traditional iconography into a rhythmic, deeply saturated spiritual narrative of unity and prosperity.
