Sunayani Devi was a self-taught artist in her thirties who spent years studying and emulating the visual languages of Raja Ravi Verma, Rajput miniature painting, and Pata folk traditions before gradually developing a distinctive artistic vocabulary of her own. In contrast to the realist tendencies in European art, which were gaining popularity in the early 19th century, she employed storytelling in her paintings. Her art aligned with the characteristics of primitive art, including spontaneity, naturalness, freedom and simplicity. Her major artworks were inspired by Kalighat pat paintings and village clay dolls, which influenced her to develop paintings depicting mythological themes and the simple everyday lives of village women. Rather than adhering to the formal conventions of academic art, particularly the emphasis on perspective, depth and technical precision, she embraced a more personal and imaginative mode of representation. Milkmaids is a remarkable work by her that depicts rural women in their everyday surroundings. It also demonstrates the Japanese wash technique she learned from Abanindranath Tagore, in which figures are outlined in red or black and filled with watercolours that blend naturally, creating a soft and fluid effect. The vibrant blue, red and purple sarees add colour to the composition, while the women’s elongated eyes suggest intimacy and solidarity. Their shared activities, such as fetching water and fuel, reflect the enduring bonds of rural women’s everyday lives.
The composition privileges frontal symmetry, flattened spatiality, and hierarchical figuration over illusionistic depth. A muted yet luminous palette, rhythmic contouring, and simplified volumetric treatment evoke folk aesthetics. Broad tonal washes, minimal modelling, and controlled negative space reinforce the painting's lyrical primitivism, decorative surface, and quiet monumentality.
