Sunayani Devi
Legendary Artist
Sunayani Devi (1875–1962) was an Indian painter associated with the culturally vibrant Tagore family of Jorasanko, Calcutta. She was the sister of the celebrated artists Abanindranath, Gaganendranath and Samarendranath Tagore. Unlike her brothers, she received no formal academic training in art and developed her practice largely through observation and self-learning. Her artistic journey began within the domestic sphere, where painting initially remained a personal and creative pursuit. She gradually developed a distinctive visual language shaped by Indian traditions, folk imagery and the artistic environment of the Tagore household. Her paintings frequently explored mythological themes, particularly the intimate world of Radha and Krishna, alongside scenes drawn from everyday life. Her simplified forms, lyrical compositions and restrained use of colour distinguish her from the more academically trained artists of her generation.
