Renowned for his versatility, Jose Maria Marques y Garcia was primarily an academic painter of the 19th century Spain. Belonging to a confluential era in visual arts, he was born in Tortosa, Tarragona, in 1862 and began exhibiting at a relatively young age. Coming from an artistic lineage, Jose received early training from his father; Manuel Marques y Carles and attained exposure to a traditional studio environment. Jose catered to the bourgeois public and the institutional exhibition system, all throughout his career, in this process, he explored a wide range of subjects, earning a reputation for being a multifaceted painter. The painting above, titled; 'Marisma' refers to a marsh or wetlands and is an expansive landscape painting. The artwork highlights the shift in the painterly intuition due to which landscape painting was becoming an increasingly independent genre in the 18th century and gives a glimpse of the fascination and interest the painter had in this tradition. The scenic composition displays the delicate treatment with which the vast panorama was conceived by the artist and how the atmospheric elements shape the sentimental nature of the picturesque landscape. As one of his earliest landscape works, it showcases Jose's emphasis, purely on the geography and environment rather than the anecdotal narratives that became prominent in some of his later paintings.
