Cecilia Beaux (1855–1942) was one of the most successful American portrait painters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, a career built at a time when few women could establish themselves in a male-dominated art world. After receiving training in Philadelphia and then Paris, she developed a style that combined academic rigour with a more subtle, atmospheric use of colour. By the 1890s critics routinely, if uneasily, ranked her alongside John Singer Sargent as one of the era's two leading portraitists. Her work was commonly described as "sympathetic" and "sensitive", which were terms that reflected gendered expectations and set her apart from Sargent’s supposedly more forceful, "virile" realism. These characterizations influenced how her art was received at the time. Scholars have since argued this framing said more about contemporary assumptions around gender than about any real difference in skill.
Man with the Cat was painted near the height of this period, depicting her brother-in-law Henry Sturgis Drinker, a forceful railroad lawyer who later became president of Lehigh University. Drinker was a dynamic and determined patriarch, yet Beaux succeeded in subtly tempering his intensity on canvas. The painting illustrates this contrast: his sun-bleached white suit, his cosy position in a wicker chair, and the sleeping marmalade cat on his lap give him a pleasant, friendly domesticity, yet his pointed whiskers and deeply lined brow imply a cautious, even guarded nature. The painting engages directly with Sargent’s portrait of Robert Louis Stevenson, in which another prominent figure is depicted in a relaxed, informal pose on a domestic chair. Both artists employ this setting to present influential men in a more approachable, human light. Yet Beaux’s work, larger in scale and more formally composed, maintains a somewhat greater emotional reserve. According to the Smithsonian's own curatorial notes, Drinker's steady, slightly cautious stare indicates that he saw in his sister-in-law a will as strong as his own, transforming a family photo into a subtly inverted display of authority.
