Malavi Ragini

Artist:Sahibdin
Support Type: Paper
Paint Type: Watercolor
Current Location: THE MET MUSEUM

The work displayed is Malavi Ragini from the Ragamala series, painted by the esteemed Mewari school artist Sahibdin. In the work, we see a couple together, looking at each other, likely sharing their deep romantic feelings, as they move towards the bed chamber. The composition is a simple one, but is effective at getting the point across. Sahibdin enhances the beauty of the work using vibrant and powerful colours, matching the passion of the two lovers. The buildings around are also very well made. The observer’s eyes first land on the couple in the middle, and then to the pristine white bedchamber, which stands out among the sea of colour. Thus, through the genius colour and composition, an effective work is made.
