Madonna and Child

Support Type: Wood Panel
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA

I think the painting is really about the humanising of a religious image. Mary and Christ are obviously sacred figures, but Lippi presents them with a softness and closeness that makes the scene feel emotionally familiar. The attention to their expressions, clothing and the landscape around them brings the divine into an almost everyday world. It feels less like a distant religious lesson and more like an image of care, tenderness and the bond between a mother and child.
