| Location History: | Luohan Meditating in a Tree is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, in the Asian Art department. Its object number is 2024.549.4. Right now it is not on display in the galleries. Gai Qi painted it in 1821, in China, during the Qing dynasty. The museum got it in 2024 as a gift from Jane DeBevoise and the Calello Family. Before that, the museum's page I checked does not show who owned it, so I am only writing what the museum confirms. |
Gai Qi’s Luohan Meditating in a Tree (1821) portrays a Buddhist holy man immersed in meditation amid nature. Through delicate ink work and poetic imagery, the painting expresses simplicity, spiritual tranquillity, and harmony with the natural world. It reveals the artist’s contemplative side beyond his celebrated paintings of women.
