Support Type: Canvas

Induno’s The Model (La modella / La modelo) created approximately in 1872 is a stunning masterpiece of the Italian 19th-century painting, a perfect illustration of the movement from romanticist sentimentalism to more realistic anti-academic approach to daily routine. With its dimensions of 85.5 by 64.5 centimeters, the oil on canvas composition breaks free from academic coldness to offer the audience an insight into the artist’s private studio through his canvas. In the center of the canvas a young woman model is shown posing in an environment of an active atelier. Instead of presenting the audience a theatrical picture, the artist offers a real story revealing the human aspect of the process of art creation. It is the young model who is portrayed in delicate psychological realism with all her professional and vulnerable side that makes her character truly human. Her graceful pose and thoughtful look create a stunning contrast with the surrounding atelier environment turning the painting into a deep reflection on artistic labor and domestic tranquility.Technical Examination In terms of executing this canvas from the technical point of view, this piece is again a good example of the professional skills of Induno’s students. The artist is known for such details as lighting, texture, and the way the story develops. The artist has very carefully populated the background with various sketches, test drawings, as well as unfinished paintings and experiments in the field of the study. The most interesting part of the composition as its process of painting is described from the very first sketch to the final brushstroke. The artist used great diffused natural light that seems to illuminate the whole space. The possibility to set the illuminant is used in the dark parts of the studio. The combination of brownish colors and white stokes creates the real atmosphere in that room and allows one to see different materials the artist used like paper, wood, skins, and canvas.
