This painting by Laharu of Chamba illustrates a dramatic episode from the Bhagavata Purana, in which the demoness Putana, sent to kill the infant Krishna, disguises herself as a beautiful nurse and approaches him with the intention of feeding him poisoned milk. The painting transforms this violent episode into a carefully balanced narrative characteristic of the Chamba Pahari miniature tradition.
The central scene depicts the gigantic Putana reclining across the interior space while the infant Krishna sits upon her body and suckles at her breast. Although she assumes the appearance of a benevolent nurse, her enormous scale and the tense interaction reveal her demonic nature. Krishna, however, remains unaffected by the poison and instead draws out her life force, causing her death. The surrounding female attendants appear alarmed and attempt to intervene, intensifying the dramatic character of the scene. Laharu contrasts the vulnerable appearance of the infant with Putana's exaggerated physical proportions, thereby emphasizing Krishna's extraordinary divine power.
The composition is particularly notable for its architectural and landscape framing. The principal episode occupies a rectangular interior chamber, while a series of stylized dark-green mountains rises above it. Below the narrative scene is a separate yellow architectural compartment containing a carefully rendered bird and an arched doorway. These compartments, together with the red outer border and ornamental bands, create a distinctly manuscript-like visual structure. The delicate linear treatment of jewellery, garments, architectural details and the patterned surfaces demonstrates the meticulous craftsmanship of Pahari miniature painting. Thematically the work expresses a central idea of Krishna's mythology: divinity concealed within apparent vulnerability. The infant who appears powerless is, in reality, capable of destroying a supernatural demon. Laharu therefore combines narrative drama, decorative refinement and devotional symbolism to transform the episode of Putana's failed deception into a visual assertion of Krishna's divine supremacy.
At first glance, it looks like a peaceful nursing scene. But notice the giant size of the nurse that is Putana in disguise! Even though Krishna looks like a tiny, helpless baby, he is actually a powerful god. Instead of being poisoned, he takes away her life force and defeats the demon, while panicked attendants try to step in. The artist uses bright colors, detailed patterns, and neat architectural boxes to show that true divine power is often hidden inside the things that look most vulnerable.
