“Krishna Adorning Radha's Breast” is a beautiful work of art from the Kangra school, taken from the 'Gita Govinda' Series. The painting centers on Krishna and Radha, the two lovers that the Gita Govinda series of poetry is based on. They are depicted seated together, their faces inches apart. Krishna is depicted in a resplendent blue, with a bright yellow dhoti and shawl. A shiny crown sits on his head, along with a necklace, bracelet, and earrings. He is shown painting Radha’s chest, who watches on with rapt attention. She is wearing a vibrant orange skirt, and exquisite jewellery such as bangles, earrings, necklaces, nose rings, and much more. The lush green background, with trees shown rustling in the wind, and a river flowing across the field where the divine couple sit, creates a beautiful scene, reminiscent of spring in the Himachal region. The painter is able to present the essence of the beauty of the Himachal landscape in the work, and the harmony of the landscape becomes an essential characteristic of the artwork.
The work is attributed to Kushala (1730-1790), who was a painter part of the illustrious Pandit Seu-Manaku-Nainsukh lineage that defined the Kangra school of art. He was the son of Manaku, and part of the ‘Masters of the First Generation after Manaku and Nainsukh’ that continued the lineage of their predecessors. Kushala was the favourite artist of Sansar Chand(1765-1824), the Katoch dynasty Rajput ruler of the Kangra state.
