Krishan and Arjun

Support Type: Cotton Cloth

Baburao's training as a theatre backdrop painter shows in how the scene is built. Krishna stands at full height against an open sky, and the bright blue of his body sets him apart from the grass and the seated figure. Arjuna is folded low on the ground, with his bow and arrows set down beside him. The bow is the detail I keep returning to. In the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna lays down his bow at the start of the battle, overwhelmed by doubt about fighting his own kin. Here the weapon rests on the earth while Krishna raises a conch, the instrument that announces a battle, so the painting holds the moment before counsel begins.
