Kalpak

Support Type: Canvas
Paint Type: Oil Paint
Current Location: Undocumented
Location History:The painting’s earlier provenance is not publicly documented. It was offered as Lot 14 in Saffronart’s Spring Live Auction on 26 March 2019, where it was sold for ₹9.2 lakh. The auction catalogue notes that the work had been imported into India and was then held in a Free Trade Warehousing Zone

Kalpak shows a royal court scene in which a seated ruler gestures toward an attendant who pours pearls from a tray, while other courtiers stand by with folded arms or joined hands. The Marathi inscription at the top frames the scene as an act of generosity. The painter uses perspective, warm earthy colours and carefully placed figures to lead the eye through the room and tell a story. The result feels like a moment of ceremony rather than a still portrait.
